While many models on the market utilize smart keys for seamless vehicle entry and ignition, Hyundai has announced that they have taken the technology one step further with fingerprint recognition sensors. Once implemented, the fingerprint sensors would make equipped Hyundai models more secure than with traditional smart keys. The first model slated to receive the new technology is the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe which is scheduled for release sometime in the first part of 2019.

Like with traditional smart key applications, drivers will need to place their hands on the door handle and the engine start/stop button to enter and start the vehicle. Unlike the old system, this system would read individual fingerprints to access rather than receive a signal from a corresponding key. Hyundai has plans to release the fingerprint technology to other models in the future with increased capability including personalized cabin settings for each driver’s unique fingerprint. In the future, equipped Hyundai models could adjust temperature settings, seat adjustment, side mirror adjustment, and more as soon as the driver’s fingerprint is detected for a seamless driving experience with no manual adjustments needed between drivers.
“In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research & Development Division of the Hyundai Motor Company. “This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer.”
