Why does my tire pressure change in the winter?

Over time, it’s normal for your tires to slowly lose air and drop in pressure or PSI. This is usually a gradual process that can be managed every few weeks. However, drivers may notice that in cold weather, the tire pressure can drop significantly in just the course of one day. This is normal and is caused by the drop in temperature and happens especially fast with fluctuations in temperature are extreme from day to day. How To Adjust Tire Pressure In Cold Weather

Your recommended tire pressure rating, or PSI, does not change in cold weather. You can find your recommended PSI in your owner’s manual or on a sticker on your door jamb. The only thing that should change in cold weather is how often you are checking your tire pressure. While monthly check-ins should usually get you through months where there is little temperature change, we recommend checking your tires weekly in cold weather and additionally, if the temperature makes any sudden changes.

If the temperature is hovering at or below zero, we also recommend checking that your airfill station is working properly before trying to adjust your tire pressure. If it is not blowing air, move to a different station or hold off on the adjustment so you don’t lose any air in the process.
