Ford Develops New Dual-Wall Dashboard For Quieter Cabins

Ford takes family travel seriously. To better equip their fleet of family-friendly SUV models, they have created a number of features that help to combat a common complaint: cabin noise. In addition to Active Noise Control, their newest SUV, the 2020 Ford Explorer, will be outfitted with a brand new dual-wall dashboard to banish engine noise from the cabin once and for all.

“We’ve spent a lot of time learning about what our Explorer customers want and love in their SUV, and near the top of the list is a comfortable vehicle they can enjoy with their loved ones,” said Craig Patterson, Ford SUV marketing manager. “Whether it’s taking the family up north for the weekend or taking a date to the movies on Saturday night, a quieter interior allows them to better connect with those who are along for the journey.”

While the dual-wall dashboard works to prevent any noises from entering the cabin, Active Noise Control helps to block noises that are already there creating a quiet area perfect for family conversations. Active Noise Control uses a system of microphones throughout the cabin to detect any unwanted noises and then uses sound waves from the audio system to cancel them out. While the process is quite complicated, all drivers and passengers need to do is enjoy their peaceful environment. Active Noise Control comes standard on 2020 Explorer Limited Hybrid configurations.

How does the dual-wall dashboard work?

The dual-wall dashboard helps to significantly reduce the noise coming from the 2020 Explorer’s engine. Separating the engine and cabin are two walls with an air gap in between that provides noise insulation.

“This innovation is very similar in theory to an insulated thermos or mug,” says Lewis. “The multiple layers of a mug keep unwanted ambient temperatures out, while the multiple layers of this dual-wall dashboard keep unwanted noise out of the vehicle cabin.”
